Afro-Raga: A Celebration of Heritage, Harmony, and Sound

Durban audiences are in for a musical treat as Afro-Raga takes centre stage at the UKZN Centre for Jazz & Popular Music on Tuesday, 30 September 2025, at 17:30pm.

Curated and led by Kerolin Govender, Afro-Raga is more than a concert — it is a celebration of South Africa’s diversity expressed through sound. The performance brings together the richness of Indo-African traditions, offering a journey through ghazals (love songs), soulful film music, semi-classical and Sufi expressions, and African soul and jazz influences.

For Govender, a South African-born vocalist and creative director, the concert embodies his belief that our diversity is what makes us resilient. “Music and art reflect the soul of our nation,” he shares. “By blending Indian and African sounds, we uncover the beauty of South Africa’s shared heritage while building bridges between communities.”

The evening features acclaimed jazz artist Thulile Zama, whose captivating voice has carried her across genres and stages both locally and abroad. Known for her versatility and depth, Zama adds a soulful dimension to the concert.

Supporting the performance is a distinguished line-up of South African musicians: Rajive Mohan (Keyboard), Veedhern Punwasi (Tabla), Shamand Maharaj (Guitar), and Hamish Lutchman (Drums). Together, they create a dynamic soundscape where traditions intertwine seamlessly.

Audiences can expect an immersive experience where heritage meets harmony. Afro-Raga invites listeners not just to hear music, but to feel it as a living dialogue between cultures, a true reflection of South Africa’s spirit of unity.
