Press release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lu Dlamini live at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday 07 August 2024
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is excited to present Lu Dlamini, a talented Durban-based vocalist and traditional instrumentalist, on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 17:30. Dlamini, celebrated for her unique approach as an Umakhweyana player and her guitar skills, will be performing with a stellar ensemble featuring Zibusiso Makhathini on piano, Ntobeko Shandu on bass, Marius Botha on guitar, and Riley Giandhari on drums.
Dlamini, who hails from the Natal south coast and comes from a musical family, is known for her distinctive style, as showcased in her previous album, “Ulimilam.” During the event in August at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, she will also preview songs from her forthcoming album, which focuses on themes of peace and Ubuntu—a South African philosophy emphasizing communal interconnectedness.
In her reflections, Dlamini draws on South Africa’s complex history, noting the contrast between the hopeful songs of the past and the current challenges faced by many. She highlights the role of music in advocating for peace and social justice, and how it served as a platform for expressing a vision of unity during times of political struggle. August, being Women’s Month, adds special significance to her performance as she continues to use her music to foster understanding and promote a cohesive culture.Gig Listing
